LOS ANGELES – The man sat in the audience at the annual E3 Conference. His mouth open and closing as we worked on the morsel left over from lunch. His idol, Elon Musk, was sitting comfortably on the stage geeking out about tech. The stage lighting was azure. Musk was talking about his early years and when he became interested in tech.
“Part of the reason I got into technology, maybe the reason, was video games,” said Musk, adding “I probably wouldn’t have started programming if it wasn’t for video games or I wouldn’t have been as interested in computers and technology if it wasn’t for video games, so I think video games are a very powerful force in getting young kids into technology.”
Musk then talked about being broke and having to borrow money for rent.
“Basically I took all the money I made from Paypal and put it into SpaceX, into creating SpaceX, Tesla and SolarCity and initially I figured I’d keep half of it and then spend the other half on these crazy ventures that would probably fail. Unfortunately, they needed all the money so again I had to give them all the money and then I didn’t have a house and I had to borrow money for rent. That was pretty difficult. That was back in 2008. And then we managed to scrape enough spare parts together to do a fourth launch at SpaceX and that worked. If it had not worked, SpaceX would have died and probably would have lacked the credibility to raise the remaining money for Tesla and we wouldn’t have been here today or maybe not this ending.”
