By Staff Writer — Santa Monica’s annual Twilight Concert Series returns this Thursday, August 4th, featuring Latina pop rock singer songwriter Natalia Lafourcade and the Colombian swing band Monsieur Perine. The free event runs from 7-10 pm on the Santa Monica Pier.

Lafourcade emerged in the Latin America pop rock scene with her 2003 self-titled debut album. She made waves with her Grammy-winning album Hasta La Raiz, which she released in March of last year.  At the most recent Latin Grammy Awards, Lafourcade was nominated for a total of six awards.  Lafourcade, a musical savant, won five of the six nominations including Record of the Year.

Monsieur Perine is one of the biggest bands in Colombia’s emerging music scene. With an unconventional sound that blends tango and samba with jazz and pop, the Bogota natives are known for a dynamic live performance.  Monsieur Perine, like Lafourcade, is also a Latin Grammy Award Winner.  In 2015, Monsieur Perine won Best New Artist.

In the beginning, Monsieur Perine was an indie artist who tried to build their fan base on their own.  But unlike the early rough and lean days, Monsieur Perine according to Billboard, has steadily been performing in Colombia and Europe after the Latin Grammy Awards are finally gaining the international recognition they deserve.

Catalina Garcia, one of the singers for Monsieur Perine, is a willowy 27 year-old who was born in Cali, Colombia.  Garcia, imparts a happy, joyous feeling to those she meets and reminds one of the girl-next-door with whom you could fall in love with or who could be your best friend.  In an recent Esquire Colombia interview, Garcia, the only female in Monsieur Perine, says that she spends hours rehearsing and playing music with the band.  In fact, she said Monsieur Perine, who formed  in 2007 got together because they all just wanted to play.  In the beginning, the band would play anywhere, including weddings, parties, baptisms – you name it.  They just wanted to play.

That motivation and love of playing live paid off and Monsieur Perine now has a recording contract with Sony Music.

The Twilight Concert Series provides a great opportunity for concert goers to see up-and-coming talent with one of the most iconic SoCal attractions as a backdrop. Staffers recommend coming early and packing a picnic. Additionally, attendees can RSVP for the chance to win VIP passes to the concert.

Don’t forget to bring your beach blankets and sweatshirts as it gets cold once the sun sets over the Pacific.
