17 January 2012, Santiago, Chile. Students in Santiago continue to protest against the Chilean government in hopes to gain equal access for all students to education. Noam Titleman, President for the Students’ Federation of the Catholic University said, “It’s common sense that people have the same access to opportunities and quality education. It is also common sense that people who have more money, should pay more.” In 2011, students across Chile demonstrated continuously and, according to Reuters, often turned the streets of Santiago into a “Battlegound.” The first large protest of the year is scheduled to take place in March.
Google, Wikipedia, and Others Protest SOPA Bills

17 January 2012 – Washington, D.C. Remember when you were in grade school and your 3rd grade teacher caught you looking at the smart kid’s test? You weren’t really copying her answers were you? No, you were just taking a hint from her and moving in the right direction. Sure. Right. Flash forward several years and we now find ourselves in a much more technically advanced world amidst marvels of change. But, what hasn’t really changed is basic human behavior. Take the internet and the current laws that the US government is trying to pass. Known as SOPA, the bills address the problem of on-line piracy. If the bills are passed into laws, the US government will have the right, says Lance Ulanoff,Editor In Chief of Mashable, “To take block your site from the internet or take it down from the internet.” A lot of debate has gone into the problem of on-line piracy and the use of unauthorized content. Many would say that the crackdown and proposed SOPA bills are inevitable. Like anything else, there are two sides to the story and who will be the judge of piracy? For example, is it piracy when you quote someone? Historically no, however, is it piracy when you use someone else’s art, for example music, when you are creating a video for the internet? If you don’t have the artist’s authorization then the answer is yes. The internet is still in it’s’ infancy and will continue to evolve and it is clear that there probably should be some type of control mechanism banning illegal use of intellectual property on the internet. At the moment, there are many people and managers of sites such as Wikipedia who feel that the current proposal don’t fit the bill. Maybe my 3rd grade teacher is up for the job.
16 January 2012, Giglio, Italy – Just by mentioning the phrase Friday the 13th is enough to give many people the shivers or at the very least remind them of the movies that went by the same name. Now, we have another reason to think that the day is cursed or at least unlucky. The Costa Concordia, an Italian cruise ship sank and at least three people died on that day during the shipwreck. The Italian authorities arrested the ship’s Captain, Francesco Shettino yesterday for abandoning the ship before it was evacuated and more importantly for “manslaughter.” Prosecutor Franceso Verusion said, “We arrested the captain because we are concerned that there may be an attempt to tamper with evidence.” Reuters reports that when the coastguard asked Shettino to return to the vessel he “Refused.”

13 January 2012, Sweden and The UK – If you have ever been to New York City, then you will know that one of the most enjoyable things to do is buy a hot dog from a street vendor, slather it with mustard and hot onions and eat “The dog” while people watching. Unfortunately researchers in Sweden have now found that by eating that hot dog you could be increasing your risk of pancreatic cancer by 20%. Susanna Larson, an Associate Professor in Stockholm said, “We think it could be due to the nitrates found in processed meat.” Apparently, the nitrates can be converted to N-nitroso compounds, which, according to Larson, “Are cancerous.” In addition to hot dogs, meats high in nitrates are: bacon, salami, and other processed meats. In the UK, research has shown that people who eat 50 grams of processed meat per day increase the risk of cancer “by 20%,” according to Health Information Manager, Jessica Harris.
